David Geldart of Lumicrest Lighting Solutions explains the different beam angle (lens) options for LED lights and some guidelines on when and where to use them. Why do LEDs need lenses? Without a lens the LED emits light in a broad 120 + degree angle. Lens optics are needed to gather and focus the light. Different lenses are used to achieve different beam angles. Most of our lights have either changeable lenses or our Apturi3 track light has a continuously adjustable lens.
