This is my follower Ally Jencson @UnTameTheTigres She has a question.

"I want to create my own hashtag to use via my radio show. Is there a way to purchase rights to one or do I just tell people to start using it, I use it as well, etc?"

Great question, Ally.

We will start with what a hashtag is.

A hashtag is a word in any message that starts with the # sign and when you click it you go to a page that shows you all other Tweets marked with that keyword.

Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet; at the beginning, middle or end.

If you Tweet with a hashtag on a public account, anyone who does a search for that hashtag may find your Tweet.

To create a new hashtag you just start using it and ask others to use it.

Here are two tips from Twitter about using hashtags correctly

Do not #spam #with #hashtags. Do not over-tag a single Tweet. (Best practices recommend using no more than 2 hashtags per Tweet.)

Use hashtags only on Tweets relevant to the topic.
