Character is the trades of your personality, the way you feel, think and behave.
When you express character in dance, you bring across these trades through your movement.
In dance there are two characters you can express:
1. Your personal character (Additude)
2. A character outside of that of youw own.(Another person)

When expressing another character than that of your own you could see it as acting.

Allot of the freestyle dance history evolved around the creation of dance characters inspired by cartoons or tv shows. Taking a existing character like for instance Batman can inspire you to create moves that you could not when dancing like yourself.
The most famous and influential character ever is probably the robot.

Real personalities & Stereotypes
Even in real live we can find great characters walking this earth.
Taking the stereotype of these real people can also create great character material. For instance a King, drunk man, nerd.

Animals
It is said that one of the first inspirations towards dance/reasons to why people dance was the mimicing of animals.
In martial arts you can also see a huge influence of animals and take inspiration from this.

We do not always have to take existing characters to dance with.
Creating a complete now person with it's own behaviour is also a possibility and gives allot of freedom and possibly a more in depth character.

Music is like a story told in sound. If you are able to grasp this story and act it out. A character deeply connected to the music can be created from that. Some songs may sound electronic and create a robot character. Others can be very rythmical and create a jungle feel which creates a animal character.
