How to do Stage Makeup for Dancers - The Parent and Dancer guide to basic stage makeup
ChannelElement Dance StudioDescription from the creator
Hi everyone! Today we are showing you the basic stage makeup we do for our dancers at Element Dance Studio.
On stage, faces can fade away by bright lights and distance. Just like theater performances, dancers makeup needs to be much darker than everyday street makeup for a dancer’s face to be seen by the audience.
The colours we use:
* Black eyeliner that wings at the top (makes it easier to see eyes)
* Neutral colours for eyeshadow (browns and bronzes)
* Pink blush
* Red lipstick - Covergirl Ever-Reddy
Helpful tips:
1 - Foundation: Note: For our very young dancers, no foundation is required.
Match colour of foundation to dancer's skin tone. Use a makeup sponge to dab the foundation evenly across dancers face and neck. Finish with powder to avoid shine on stage.
2 - Cheeks: Use neutral pink tones of blush to give the face a natural looking glow to be seen from stage. Have your dancer give a big smile smile to help apply the blush in the correct spot. Swipe upwards toward the temples with a blush brush.. Blend well!
3 - Eyes:
For eye shadow: Choose a light neutral color to highlight the brow bone first. Follow by medium brown over lid, and extend darkest colour to outside.
For eye liner: Use black eyeliner on the top lash line. Extend a “wing” ½ an inch out on the top lid. Liquid eyeliner creates smooth solid lines. Go in 3/4 on bottom lid
4 - Lips: Unless otherwise noted, red lipstick is to be worn *Please make sure that once lipstick is applied, it stays on the lips! Red lipstick is very noticeable on hands and costumes. Check out Covergirl Ever-Reddy
5 - Eyebrows: Eyebrows need to be enhanced for stage performances because much of our emotional expression is shown in our eyebrows. Use an eye shadow or soft pencil in a color that is the same as, or one to two shades darker than the hair color. You want to keep the brow soft and natural but enhance it enough to allow the audience to clearly see the dancer’s emotional expression.
