How to Drive On Freeways and Motorways and Predict Traffic Patterns

When driving along freeways, take note of where the on-ramps & acceleration lanes are located. In knowing where these are located, you can scan farther down the road and make adjustments in your driving--reduce speed slightly or merge--to attain a higher daily average speed.

The other indicator that allows you to predict traffic patterns are signs, and not just the traffic signs that apply to passenger vehicles, but all signs. In the video, for example, "Engine Brakes Prohibited" indicates that large commercial vehicles will most likely be travelling a slower speeds. Most commercial vehicles, when travelling slower, will stay in the right-hand lane, and if you move to the left (fast lane) you can prevent the possibility of a slow-down.

Finally, if there are more than two lanes along the motorways, freeway or interstate, do not drive in the right-hand lane unless you are exiting. On a 3-lane freeway, the centre lane is the best lane to drive in for defensive posturing. If you are passing driving in the fast lane, but get back over after passing. If you need to exit the freeways, motorway, or interstate soon, get over to the slow lane.
