How to Dye Lace & Elastic for a Lingerie Set
BLOG: juliciarose.com/blog/747

INSTRUCTIONS
Based on directions from ritdye.com/techniques/the-basics/stovetop-techn… && youtube.com/watch?v=wL6NFLL8NI0

1. Wash the lace beforehand to remove any finishes that may interfere with dye absorption. I did not wash the elastic because the elastic I bought was labeled as dyeable.

2. Protect your countertops with plastic wrap, a plastic table cover, or newspaper so dye doesn't get on it.

3. Rit Dye box suggests that you estimate the weight of the item to be dyed to determine how much dye to use. As a guideline, ½ bottle liquid dye or 1 box powder dye will color up to one pound of fabric. I am not this organized. I added water, and guesstimated how much dye to add. This is probably why I didn't get the exact color I wanted.

4. Fill a large stainless steel pot with enough water for the fabric to move around freely. Use 3 gallons of water for every 1 pound of fabric. Heat water so it simmers (just below boiling.)

5. Wearing rubber gloves, shake dye bottles. Use 1/2 bottle Rit liquid dye or 1 package of Rit powder dissolved in 2 cups of very hot water for each pound of fabric. For dark colors, double the amount of dye. Stir well.

6. Add 1 cup of salt for cottons or 1 cup of white vinegar for silk, wool and nylon. You can add a squirt of dishwashing liquid (I didn't).

7. Using a paper towel or scrap of fabric, test dye color to make sure it’s the shade you want. If color is too light, add more dye. If color is too dark, add more water.

8. Time to add your fabric to the pot! First, make sure you saturate the lace and the elastic with warm water. Squeeze out any excess water. Add the fabric and elastic to the dye bath in your pot.

9. Bring the dye bath to simmer. Stir *constantly* — back and forth, and up and down — until you get the color you want. Make sure the item does not get twisted or tangled as this could cause uneven dyeing. Fabric color appears darker when wet.

10. Remove fabric from the dye bath and rinse thoroughly in cool water until the water runs clear.

11. Depending on how delicate your lace is, you can wash it by hand or put it in the washing machine on a delicate cycle. Rit Dye company suggests that you throw it in the washing machine with an old towel. I did not have any old towels on hand, so I didn't add one. I did notice that my bra hook back and eye got darker, so I'm guessing any excess dye that may have been present could have colored them.

12. Air dry on a line.
