If you need to find a compression stroke top dead center this can be a little tricky. The piston comes up two times in the four stroke cycle. One of those strokes is a compression stroke the other is the exhaust stroke. If use a balloon you can watch the balloon inflate this will verify that you are truly on the compression stroke. If you’re on the exhaust stroke the balloon will show a vacuum visually. If you need to verify that you’re on the compression stroke this is a good way to do it. If you don’t do a test like this you have a 50-50 chance. If you want both valves closed and top dead center this is the test you need to do.
