Common millipedes in the United States only grow from ½ an inch to 2 inches. Their bodies are semi-cylindrical in shape, and they’re typically black or brown. They have relatively short antennae, and they have 2 pairs of short legs per body segment.
Check in and around your home for areas high in humidity or spots where moisture collects. Indoors, you should check areas like your basement, garage, bathroom, and any room that can reasonably become very humid. Outdoors, look for spots where standing water can form, and also spots that can retain high amounts of moisture like, bricks, wood piles, and leaves. Check the outer perimeter of your structure for entry points millipedes can use to get into your home, like doors, windows, or other cracks and voids in the wall. Take note of every site you find, as these will direct where you’ll focus your treatment.
Before starting any treatment, be sure to wear your personal protective equipment, or PPE, and remember to keep all people and pets off the treated areas until dry. To get rid of millipedes on your property, you’ll need to use insecticides labeled for millipede control like Bifen LP, Reclaim IT, and D-Fense Dust. You’ll use Bifen LP and Reclaim IT to control millipedes outdoors, and Reclaim IT and D-Fense Dust to control millipedes indoors.
Begin by starting outside with Bifen LP. First calculate your lawn’s square footage to determine how much product you need to use. Do this by measuring the area’s length and width and multiplying them together. Apply Bifen LP granules with a push spreader to apply the labeled rate of 2.3 to 4.6 pounds of product per 1,000 square feet of treatment area.
To treat for millipedes around your structure, use Reclaim IT at an application rate of 0.33 - 1.0 fluid ounces of Reclaim IT per 1,000 square feet of treatment area. We recommend using the higher rate because at that rate you will be able to effectively control millipedes along with many other pests. Since you’ll be making targeted spot and barrier treatments, we recommend using a 1 gallon handheld pump sprayer. First, spray the entry points you’ve noted around the outside of your home like doors, windows, vent openings, and other voids in the wall. Once you’ve treated entry points, conduct a perimeter treatment around your structure.
When applying indoors, Reclaim IT can be used at the same rate you used outdoors, but can only be used for spot or crack and crevice applications. First, spot or crack and crevice applications you may have found, like around plumbing or underneath appliances. Then spray along your baseboards to treat millipedes that may travel there. Next, use an insecticide like D-Fense Dust to treat small openings where you’ve seen millipede activity. To use D-fense Dust, you’ll need a handheld duster with a long, narrow spout to treat tight cracks and crevices. Treat along the edge of carpeting, along baseboards where you’ve seen millipede activity. Apply dust behind and underneath high-moisture areas like sinks, and appliances.
