Laminate Top Fabrication - Best Way For Professional Installation
The #verycoolguys of construction share a secret tip in this diy laminate top fabrication video.
How to Create a Custom Laminate Top
Today the #verycoolguys are going to show you how to create a laminate top using Medium Density Fiberboard and a sheet of Wilson art laminate.
What you will need:
1. Tape Measure
2. Straight Edge
3. A Saw
4. Power Drill
5. Palm Router
6. Clamps
7. Paint Brush and Roller
8. Paint Tray and Liner
9. Contact Adhesive
10. Wilson Art Laminate Sheet
11. M.D.F. Board
12. Wood Dowels
13. Broom and Dust Pan
14. A Good Helper
15. The Hands of a Surgeon
16. Good Music
This is by no means a complete list but these are the tools we used to achieve professional results for this laminate top installation, so they are recommended.
First start by getting the correct measurements for the space you wish to fill in for your diy laminate top.
Once you have the correct measurements make sure to mark them with a straight edge on your mdf board.
Next, cut your board to size and length of measurements.
After cutting your board, screw it in place so it won’t move when you cut laminate sheets around it.
Next, place the laminate sheet on top of your mdf board aligning the edges as closely as possible.
If you happened to watch our new router showdown video, then you would know to use a Makita router at this stage of the job, which is to trim laminate.
Now once you have lined up the edges correctly you’re ready to clamp the laminate top in place to begin to cut laminate sheets to size.
Begin to trim laminate top edges out using a slow and steady motion, this may take a few passes to achieve the desired result.
Once you have cut laminate sheet to size you are ready to remove the clamps, repeat this process depending on how many pieces of mdf board you must cover.
One more thing before you finish trimming your laminate top at this stage remember to leave excess and cut laminate sheets in strips to cover the front edge of your mdf board and any sides that may still be visible also known as ears.
Now remove the mdf board you have screwed down and place it in its desired position, you will need to take some more measurements at this stage for drilling holes to mount the board with screws.
Once you have taken your measurements mark them on your board, where it is safe to drill a hole.
Begin to drill out your holes, make sure to have the right kind of screws, we used metal screws well because we were screwing the board down to metal.
Once you have your holes drilled put the board back in place and screw it down tight…..TIGHT
Now at this stage of the process you will need to apply your adhesive to both the laminate sheets using a paint brush or roller and the mdf board to ensure a tight seal. We use Wilson Art H20 Contact Adhesive.
Remember “Thin to Win” is the motto here and a little will go a long way. Now let the adhesive tack up to make sure it will stick when applying your laminate.
Now place your wooden dowels on top of your mdf board and slide your piece of cut laminate sheets in place on top of the dowels.
Once it is all lined up remove your dowels one by one in a row to stretch out your laminate in place. Then roll out the laminate sheet to take out any bubble or bends.
Using a router trim laminate excess off from the mdf board for a close edge, repeat the process with the smaller pieces of laminate for the visible edges of the mdf board.
Now your diy laminate top installation is complete!
