A good mortar mix will make brick laying so much easier. The mortar provides a bed for the bricks to sit into, taking up any discrepencies in the size of the bricks and keeping the top nice and level.
A good mortar mix is four parts sand, one part sand and half part lime. The lime increases the workability of the mix, making the job much easier. You can also buy premix bags with lime already added.
