Description from the creator

Making a sundial teaches the connection between time of day and direction. Here is the webpage where this is explained in further detail:

camping-tips.com/Daytime_camping_entertainment.…

I refer to it as daytime entertainment because it's kind of fun do. The kids enjoying doing this project.

If you teach other people outdoor skills this is absolutely a must do exercise at your base camp. It will really cement the concept of how the sun moves across the sky and the corresponding effect on the direction and length of the shadow in respect to time of day. Once your troop gets the concept they begin to see how to tell the direction just by knowing the time of day and observing any shadow. This is an essential outdoor skill to have in your camping bag of tricks. It will keep you from getting lost.

Thus it is also very important to teach to young and novelist campers. It also explains why it's so easy to get lost on a cloudy day. ( Something to be wary of )

As pointed out in the video the shadow points in the direction of true north when it is shortest which will be around noon. This can be confirmed by locating the north star after it gets dark. ( Another must know outdoor skill.)
