How To Make A Dainty Aquamarine Necklace: DIY Jewelry Tutorial

This Dainty Aquamarine Necklace is made with a little wirework and two pieces of chain. We’ll show you how to make the central bar using real aquamarine gemstone chips.

Transcript (Abridged)
To make this Aquamarine Necklace, the first thing you need is wire. We have 24-gauge wire in gold. Then we have our aquamarine beads. These are chip beads. We've got some gold loop chain that has open loops. Then we have a lobster clasp and a jump ring. For tools we have chain-nose pliers round-nose pliers and wire cutters.

To make our necklace, we're going to cut a piece of our 24-gauge wire. We want about an inch and a half beaded, but we want a little bit of extra wire on either end to work with. So I'm going to cut a 4 inch piece of wire. I'm gonna show you our chain. We had a piece of chain that we bought at a bead show that was about 17 inches long. And we cut this in half. So each piece is eight and a half inches long. We're going to start by taking our wire and we're going to make a wrapped loop in one end of the wire attaching it to the chain. So I'm going to come about the 3/4 of an inch down on my wire and I'm going to grasp the wire with my pliers and I'm going to bend the wire 90 degrees. Then I'm going to reposition my pliers so they're at the top of that bend and I'm going to pull the wire up and over that top jaw and then reposition to put the bottom jaw in that loop and then I'm pulling the wire around. And before I wrap this loop, I'm going to hold onto it and take one of my pieces of chain and I'm going to feed that piece of wire through the last link of my chain and nestle it down into the loop. Now I want to wrap that loop. So I'm going to grasp the loop across with my pliers. And then I'm going to take this little tail and wrap it around the neck of our wire. I'm gonna wrap it around two times. I'm going to trim my wire with my wire cutters.

Now we're ready to bead. I like to take a bunch of the aquamarine chip beads, put them in my hand and then just fish them out of my hand. You can just fish them out of your hand like this until you have about an inch and a half of the chip beads on your wire. That looks like about an inch and a half of beads. So now we're ready to attach this to our other piece of chain. To do that we're going to use the same technique we used on the other side of our little bar of beads here. We're going to make a wrapped loop and feed it onto the end of the chain.

Our little beaded section is done on our chain, and all we need to do is attach the clasp. That's super easy with our lobster clasp. We've got our jump ring. We're going to open the jump ring and attach this to one end of our chain. I can take one end of my chain. Feed the jump ring on, take my lobster clasp, feed it on. And now I'm going to close this the same way I opened it. One nice thing about this kind of open loop chain is I can use the lobster clasp through any one of these links which makes it a little bit adjustable rather than having to put an end on the other end my chain. And there you can see we've got a beautiful Aquamarine Necklace.

This dainty Aquamarine Necklace is so elegant! We think it would look pretty with other chip beads too - Garnets, Labradorites, or Jade. If you have any questions about this or any other jewelry making project, leave us a comment and we'll reply. We love helping!
