How To Make Adjustable Ring
ChannelhouseofgemsonlineDescription from the creator
I'm going to make today a really sweet adjustable ring. I'm going to be using some aquamarine, some blue color, and some gold beads. They're all about two millimeters in size, and I really think that's the biggest that you want your beads on this particular design.
We're gonna start off by forming our ring. I'm gonna use a ring mandrel. If you don't have one, use something round in shape that you can wrap around like a really thick or something like that.
So I'm gonna grab my 20 gauge wire and wrap it around my ring mandrel to the size that I want it to be. I'm wrapping it around. There's our ring shape. I'm gonna trim that little end there because it's a bit... not quite flattened well enough for my design. So there we have it. There's our little... that's gonna go in and out of shape as we do this, but we can always reshape it around our mandrel afterwards.
So I'm gonna cut a length of 26 guage wire and I'm gonna wrap my 26 gauge wire around my frame so that we get a really neat finish. So I'm gonna start by wrapping my wire around my 20 gauge wire a few times, and as you're going through, keep pushing your loops up together. So keep wrapping that around a couple more times.
I might pull those out a little bit. Okay, so now we've anchored our wire onto our main frame. I'm gonna pop a few beads on. What I might do with this particular one is put a gold bead on the outside. So I'm gonna hold my bead on the top of my frame with my fingers and then I'm gonna wrap around twice, hold it there, and then I'm gonna grab one of my aquamarine beads, pop that onto my wire, and wrap my wire around that frame twice. And what I'm gonna do on this particular... with this bead is I want to create almost a little bezel out of the wire.
So you can see how that stuck really nicely on there, but we have what looks like a little bezel down the bottom. I'm gonna wrap my wire around a couple more times to anchor that really well in place, and I'm gonna add another gold bead on this side.
So now that I've got that in place where I want it to be, I'm gonna really firmly stick it in place. I'll start with this end of the wire. I wanna wrap that around a few times. So coiling around my frame. I'm gonna keep pushing those loops together so that I keep it looking as neat as possible. Make sure it's all nicely squished together and I'm gonna keep going around with this length of my wire. Keep pushing it up to where I want it to be and then keep coiling around. It's up to you really how many beads you add to this. You can add lots or not very many. You might want to leave it at that, a centered beaded section and then keep... and then leave it like that, or you might wanna add a few more.
Now what I might do is actually start from this end, because I want to have some beads on my bottom section of my wire. So I'm gonna cut another length of 26 gauge wire. I'm gonna start coiling that around the problem section of my wire.
So I might move all these close to the end. I'll put a few more in. You don't want your coils to get right to the very end of your wire, because what you'll find is that it'll actually slip off. So leaving a little bit of a space, and what you can do is actually hammer that little end to make sure that your wires stop there, or you can stick a bit of metal glue on there to make sure that it's stuck really well in place. What I might do is add one little bead down here. This is a light colored Amazonite that I'm using. I'm gonna do the same thing in terms of hooking that wire bit on my wire. Wrapping around twice and then creating my little bezel around the bottom of my coiled wire. I'm just holding my bead on the top there and then once I've gone round about five times, bring my wire back round and coil it around my 20 gauge wire.
Okay, so that's pretty much the only techniques that I'm gonna be using to create this particular design. So what I'll do is, I will keep going with that, and we'll check in when I've nearly completed.
You can see that I finished off going right around my ring there. So what I've done, I've repeated my design on the other side and make sure that all my sections are coiled with some wire. To finish off to prevent the ends of that wire coming off, I'm gonna give a really light hammer. There we go. So I've done that to both ends of my design. Now what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna pop it back on my mandrel to shape it round like so. It sort of hardens a bit as you work with it, so it does get a little bit more difficult to pop into shape. But there you go, there's our adjustable ring. I hope you enjoyed the tutorial. See you next time.
