The first coat that I put on board that I am using in a rustic furniture project is a Steel Wool-Vinegar Solution that I make at home. All you need is a plastic container with a lid that seals, steel wool, and a gallon of vinegar. It makes most pieces of wood look old. There are some exceptions. New wood that was cut really young or was not properly dried will often not be affected by this solution. There is an answer but it involves oil based stains. I have a video that shows how to handle unruly pieces that show up in your projects. They don't have to be thrown aside if your painting multiple coats.
