How to Map High-Value Crops with Drones

Dr. Gregory Crutsinger from Scholar Farms using the Rededge MX and Altum multispectral cameras from Micasense in Seattle, Washington for mapping of Kona coffee in Hawaii, , a high value crop that can retail from $30-80 per pound.. These narrow band cameras are purpose built for vegetation mapping in precision agriculture. These sensors were mounted to the DJI M200 series, but the Rededge MX can also be mounted to the Sensefly eBee, Delair UX11, or the Wingtra 1. The imagery is then processed in a photogrammetry software. Pix4DFields is used as a rapid field processing tool for generating vegetation indices, such as NDVI or NDRE. Terrain following features were used in Map Pilot by Maps Made Easy for adjusting altitude and maintaining pixel size.
