These days, a parent-child relationship is becoming more and more strenuous. Many people talk, but few often listen. And its common for kids grow up wishing that their parent had listened more. But what if the problem doesn’t just lie with parents, but with the way children communicate their feelings?

Have you been experiencing negative relationship patterns, especially with your parents? This video will guide you through the steps to fix that relationship.

Step on the brake and go slowly.
In fixing your relationship with your parents, you have to stop going so fast and try being patient. Instead of being in a hurry to see certain reactions from them, learn to calm yourself and not freak out.

Perhaps you apologized for something you did, and you are expecting them to warm up to you immediately, but they don’t. Instead of saying, ‘but they are my parents, don’t they love me?’ try being patient and allow them come to you in their own time.
When you have conversations with them, do not push your agenda on them, but sit back and enjoy the conversation and the time you are spending with them. Do not be encumbered by how they would feel tomorrow or in the future. Stay present!

Listen.
Take a chill pill and listen to what they are saying and what they are not saying. It is not always about you, because your parents have issues too. Ask them questions and listen to their struggles. With listening, comes understanding, which would help both parties fix the relationship.

Stop assuming you know.
Another problem with parent-child relationship is the child assuming things, instead of just asking to get the right information. Never assume this is the way they feel because of how they act, because you might be getting it all wrong. But when you ask, and they tell you how it really is, it leaves no room for assumption. This not only fixes your relationship, but improves it. Misunderstanding and misinformation is the bane of relationships.

Communicate from a place of love.
When communicating with your parents, instead of putting up walls, communicate from a place of love, which means bringing down your walls, keeping aside rebellious attitude, and just communicating how you truly feel. Communicating from a place of love, also means keeping aside judgment and just focusing on making your parents understand your feelings.

In the past, you probably ran into your shell when you felt you were not loved, or appreciated. From now, try talking about your feelings of being unloved and unappreciated. When you do, your parents would understand why you act the way you do and you might even find that these feelings were all in your head.

If you do all these things we mentioned, you would be able to fix and improve your relationship with your parents. Learned anything today? Please share your lessons with us in the comments below.
