How to Mount a TV Above a Fireplace
ChannelSANUSDescription from the creator
There are a few considerations that you need to make before mounting a TV above a fireplace.
First, you'll need to consider the height of the fireplace. Generally speaking, most fireplace mantles are above eye level. To ensure you always have a comfortable view of the TV, you'll want to make sure the mount you use tilts downward.
Second, think about your furniture arrangement. If you couch or main seating area isn't in front of the TV, or if you have multiple viewing angles, you'll want to consider a full motion mount that allows you to swivel your TV left and right.
Third, think about stud placement. If your studs aren't perfectly centered on your fireplace, you'll need a mount with lateral shift. What this means is that you can easily shift your mount left or right after installation so that your TV is perfectly centered above your fireplace.
Lastly, think about electrical. Of course your TV will need electricity to function. If you don't have an electrical outlet above your fireplace, you'll want to set that up prior to mounting your TV.
Another item to be sure of is that the wall plate of your TV mount (the part of the mount that attaches directly to the wall) provides enough room to accomodate an outlet.
When it comes to actually installing your TV mount, it can be done in three steps.
First, you'll attach your monitor bracket to the back of your TV. All you'll need in this step is a Phillips screwdriver.
Next, comes the wall plate. SANUS provides a wall plate template, so you can be sure you are drilling the holes where your TV will be mounted exactly where they need to be.
Once you have your pilot holes drilled, you can attach your wall plate to the wall using your drill and the hardware provided.
If you're using a full motion mount like shown in the video, you'll attach the articulating arm to the wall plate.
The last step is attaching the monitor bracket on the back of your TV to the arm. Click the lock in place to confirm your TV is secure, and you're done.
