Naturally, networking is an activity that’s rooted in self-interest. You want to meet people who might hire you, bolster your career, or move you closer to your professional goals. There are loads of events happening in cities around the globe every night of the week where folks who don’t know each other down beers and swap business cards. Some of those folks will make the occasional, valuable connection.

Networking “events” can feel counterproductively clique-y and capable of forging only cursory connections between attendees. Good news is, networking can take multitudinous forms and can be done on your own terms. In fact, it should be done on your own terms, or it won’t be rewarding or effective. However, we have some networking tips that will lead to real, lasting relationship. Hopefully, they’ll appeal to those of you who are eager to beef up your professional networks but find the prospect of forced small talk with strangers about as appealing as setting your own hair on fire.

Here is how to network at a conference when you don't know anyone to get you to top of mind without making you feel overwhelmed. Let’s start with these three networking basics.

1:00 Offer to help - Go into networking events armed with helpful ideas. Make sure that any networking exchange wraps up with you asking, “How can I be helpful to you?” That way, everyone who meets you will know that you’re willing to give as well as get. Offering to help requires them to want your contact info/name and make you a "go-to" person that they won't forget.

1:12 Don’t be afraid to snoop a little - Doing a little professional social media stalking can be incredibly beneficial when working a new connection. Some people might be surprised at first to see you’ve done your homework, but taking that kind of initiative shows that you’re eager to help. Plus, it’s a surefire way to show that you’re interested in a symbiotic relationship.

2:45 Be attentive and actively listen - This seems like a fairly simple concept (these are networking basics after all), but it’s incredibly important. Whenever you’re networking, make sure you’re alert and attentive to anything that’s mentioned in passing as a need or pain point.

We’re not saying that you shouldn’t engage in networking conversations without a specific personal goal. You wouldn’t bother setting up meetings, coffee dates or phone calls if you didn’t require the input or support of others. And that’s fine. But also be willing to help. Using these three networking basics you be able to network at a conference when you don't know anyone with confidence.
