How to Plant Blueberries - Step-by-step Guide

In this video I plant blueberries. I discuss things such as pollination, different types of blueberries, amending the soil, mulching, and more.

Blueberries have only somewhat recently been developed as a domesticated crop. They are native to North America, and prior to the 1900s you would have to forage to find them growing in the wild.

The varieties I planted are both northern highbush varieties Vaccinium corymbosum. They are called bluecrop and bonus. I planted two different varieties of the same species because this allows for cross-pollination and leads to bigger berries and better yields than if the plants were only left to self-pollinate.

I amended the soil with sawdust, compost, and some berry specific fertilizer. Ideally blueberries should have a soil pH between 4 and 5. I did not do a soil test, and I am hoping that the adding of sawdust to the soil combined with mulching with sawdust will help to make the soil pH more suitable for the blueberries.

For mulching the blueberries I used sawdust from the local nursery. Sawdust has been shown in research to be the best mulch for blueberries. It would have been better if the sawdust was more composted, but I will use some fertilizer in the spring to make up for some of the nitrogen that will be taken up by the breakdown of the sawdust.
