In today's video I will be showing you how we recently attached new plasterboard to an old ceiling prior to replastering. #plasterboard #existing #ceiling

So, my pro plastering mate Gerard was back recently to plaster our bedroom. With the other rooms in the house that we've refurbished, we've been able to strip off the wood chip wall paper, prepare the ceiling with PVA for Gerard to skim directly onto.

However in our bedroom, after nearly a day's steaming, we had only managed to remove a small area of the wallpaper, which had a strange thick cardboard type paper beneath it. Also, the plasterboard itself was only 9.5mm thick, and was sagging down in various places, as well as cracking along its edges, which themselves moved when you pressed them. Finally, large black clout nails were projecting down from the ceiling - all of which made it impossible for Gerard to skim.

And here's the legal bit I have to state: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

I didn't want to rip the existing ceiling down, because we're living in the house with 2 reasonably young children, and the soot and dust that would have come down would have been too much to bare.

I bought a load of 3" x 2" timber anticipating I would be ferreting around in the loft having to install additional noggins for us to screw to, but as it happened, when Gerard started punctuating the ceiling with his drywall hammer, we identified amble joists and noggins around the central ceiling beam, meaning no additional supports were necessary.

So I ordered 6 sheets of 1.2m x 2.4m 12.5mm foil backed Gypsum plasterboard from my local builders merchants, and Gerard and I spent a day fixing the new plasterboard to the existing ceiling - which we did using clout nails to initially fix the plasterboard in place, and then 3.5mm x 60mm Gypsum drywall screws to firmly fix the plasterboard to the ceiling, which had the effect of pulling the existing ceiling up nicely in the process.

Gerard spent the next 2 days plastering the room. For a complete pro guide to plastering from one of the previous rooms Gerard plastered, check out this link youtube.com/watch?v=Ksc2mghC-4c&feature=you…
