How to Prevent Pests from Entering Your Attic

In this instructional video W. Wayne White, Board Certified Entomologist for pest control company, American Pest, in Fulton, MD shows us how to properly install insect screening and hardware cloth over an attic vent.

First, we measure and cut insect screening using the damaged piece as a template. Keep in mind that in some older homes you may find that there will be no screening intact. In this case, take appropriate measurements of the opening in an effort to cut a piece of screening that will fit securely.

Then, using our template, we cut a piece of 1/2 inch hardware cloth to fit the opening of the vent.

Now it's time to secure pests and wildlife from entering your home. We will first install the insect screening to keep bugs like Stink bugs, wasps, and hornets out by using a staple gun to tack the screen to the opening, making sure that there are no gaps.

When you are certain that you have secured the insect screening to the gable vent in such a way that it will stop pests from entering, you may then install the hardware cloth in the same manner as the screening--stapling it securely to the backside of the vent opening.

Your finished project will still allow plenty of airflow into the attic, which is the primary purpose of vents such as these. However, it will deter bugs and wildlife pests such as squirrels, racoons, and bats from making themselves at home (in yours) this winter.
