Today’s video is a little different from the usual how-to style that you’re used to.

Today’s video is about having massive impact. I want to talk to you about making the world a better place. Let me explain.

Over the past few years I have grown increasingly concerned with the state of our planet - Climate change, deforestation, water, and air pollution. All of these are very real concerns that threaten our lives and those of our future generations.

One of the key themes that I try and apply from Stephen Covey’s famous book ‘7 habits of highly effective people’ is to always be aware of what is in my circle of concern, and what is in my circle of influence. And as much as possible to stay focused on what is within the circle of influence.

So why am I talking about this ? Well it’s not good enough to just be concerned about the environment and the impact that our actions have on its well-being. We have to find actions and bring the concern for the environment into our circle of influence. Because it’s through action can we have massive impact.

So how we can make a positive contribution towards the environment?

Through waste. By looking at what we discard as waste. For those of us who live in developed nations, we have the good fortune of having an abundance of resources available to us. For most of us, certainly not all, but most of us have ample food in our fridge and a closet full of clothes. Some of us have enough disposable income to collect hats, sneakers, and luxury goods as hobbies.

Now I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with having nice things or enjoying life. I’m the first one to appreciate luxuries I am fortunate enough to enjoy. But, the one area all of us can have positive impact is through revisiting how we deal with our waste.

And just so we’re clear, I’m no expert in this matter. In fact till very recently I thought coffee cups and lids were recyclable and I would think I’m being environmentally conscious by doing my part. But turns out, I was doing more damage than good.

This got me thinking, how many of us have taken the time to educate ourselves on what’s recyclable, garbage and compost. Most cities in North America have some sort of a recycling program, but there is a disconnect between the programs and the people participating. We don't all need to be environmental experts, but we can all take fifteen minutes to educate ourselves on our specific city or town’s waste program.

Education is the first step to change.

Now here are the actions you can take once you’ve got more knowledge in this topic. and the easiest way to remember them is the 3 R’s. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

1. The most basic step that you can take is to reduce your waste. It’s estimated that for every 1 truck of packaged goods that comes into a city, an average of fourteen trucks of waste leave in its place. This is a troubling fact. So perhaps this year you can reduce the number of gifts that you purchase, and instead invest in experiences or creating something with your hands to express your appreciation for your loved ones.

2. Look to reuse or repurpose something before you decide to get rid of it. With a bit of creativity we can give an item new life and purpose. Lots of public schools and shelters are happy to pick up old yoga mats and functioning computers to use at their facilities. Remember the old adage - one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.

3. The third step to a cleaner environment is to separate your waste into the three most common types - organic (food leftovers, napkins, coffee grinds), garbage (black plastic, meat liners, stir sticks), and recycling (paper, styrofoam, cardboard). Remember to rinse and dry disposable cups and plates before you put them in recycling.

These steps are not difficult to make but they are like an Archimedes lever. Doing these simple things everyday will have a greater impact on the environment than any one single act that we make. If we all become aware of and reduce our waste then we can create a cleaner future. We can be better people and can also help in making the world a better place. And that’s Kaizen.
