How to save your InDesign layout as a PDF

You can save your layout as a pdf from any Adobe design program like InDesign and anyone with the FREE Acrobat reader will be able to view it.

PDFs are self-contained, so they won’t need the original images nor the fonts and yet will be able to see your design exactly as you created it!

The "Press Quality" PDF preset creates files for high-quality commercial printing. These outputs can be used for digital printing or for creating color separations to send to an imagesetter or platesetter. This setting downsamples images to the same resolution as the high-quality print setting, but includes all information in the file needed by a commercial printer to produce an accurate print. It converts colors to CMYK and preserves transparency, and like the “High Quality Print” setting, it embeds subsets of all fonts. This setting produces the highest quality of file reproduction and results in a large file size. However, you can't assume this is the setting a commercial printer wants for submitted PDFs. Printers can typically provide you with a spec sheet that outlines precisely what they require. In general, they’ll need to be 300ppi, or high resolution in order to be printed professionally.

“Smallest File Size” PDFs are good for pdfs to be downloaded from a website or printed from a laser jet office printer. These typically have resolutions in the 100-150ppi (pixels per inch) range.

“PDF/X-1a” PDFs support CMYK and spot colors but don’t allow color management, meaning RGB images are converted to CMYK and CMYK values are preserved. Image resolution settings are the same as the “Press Quality” preset.
