How to Snowboard Faster with SnowboardProCamp | SportRx

What can you do to snowboard faster? Sunglass Rob talks with SnowboardProCamp’s Kevin Pierce about the tips and tricks needed to hit and maintain his speed down the slope.

Speed starts with control. The more control you have over your turns and edges will give you the confidence to ride faster.
Next, practice spraying snow out the side of your snowboard.

Beginners will typically spray onto the hill, having the entirety of their board perpendicular to the slope. While it’s a technique that guarantees coming to a stop, learning how to control your speed with the tail end of the board will allow you to maintain a higher speed consistently.

Pay close attention to your turning and practice your heel edge and toe edge turns. Doing so will allow you to focus on an even rhythm. Counting to three on each edge can help until it becomes second nature. Control over your turning will let you ride faster.

Another area to practice is working on balance while steering. More aggressive turns help control speed better, so you can ride faster.

A couple tips for aggressive steering:
1. Have your backhand over the tail of your board
2. Use your front knee and shoulder to direct your board

Pick the right day to practice with good visibility and powder. Having to navigate in sub-optimal conditions will split your focus as you’re trying to improve your form. Remember to look ahead and not stare at the board. Surveying what’s ahead will help you plan your turns for smoother transitions and a better time all around.
