If you’re wondering how to stretch your food stamps, you’re not alone. We receive messages all the time from people who just don’t get enough to get by. Although we’ve talked about this extensively in other articles and videos, today we’re going to summarize the five easiest ways to stretch your food stamps.
I’m Nicole from Low Income Relief, an information service that helps millions of people every year save money and get free stuff.
If you’re wondering how to stretch your food stamps, try these five tips.
Use a rebate app.
The first and easiest way to stretch your food stamps is to use a rebate app like Ibotta or Drop. These apps can give you cash back on your food stamps purchases. Many of our readers have reported using the extra money they’ve earned to purchase other essentials that food stamps won’t cover, like toilet paper or diapers.
I have personally earned hundreds of dollars by using Ibotta. It’s an excellent service and an easy-to-use app. If you’d like to learn more about Ibotta, we have a guide to how to maximize your Ibotta revenue. There’s a link in the description, as well as an affiliate link for the Ibotta service.
Get more food stamps.
This one sounds obvious, but hear me out: you may be eligible for more food stamps than you are currently receiving. Many people don’t get the right amount, because they aren’t getting credit for all the deductions they qualify for. If you aren’t getting enough food stamps to get by, check out our article or video on how to get more food stamps. I’ll throw those links in the description as well.
Be careful where you shop.
Of course, some stores are more expensive than others. You will be able to stretch your food stamps farther by shopping at the cheapest stores. However, there are a few tips and tricks that can help you stretch those food stamps dollars.
For example, when we had food stamps, we did most of our shopping at Costco. We received 2% cash back on all of our purchases at the end of the year, and we could use that extra money to stock up on staples and essentials that food stamps can’t buy.
We also had a local salvage store that we used often. This salvage store sold items that were too old, too damaged or too close to their expiration date for the big-brand stores to sell. They also sold ugly produce that didn’t look nice enough for the fancier produce shelves. The food was perfectly safe to eat but didn’t look perfect. Those defects helped us save a lot of money on groceries, because we could regularly buy things for half-price or less.
If you’re concerned about shopping at a salvage store, be sure to check our guide about expiration dates, best buy dates and more. Those labels may not mean what you think they do, and learning about them may be able to save you a lot of money.
Shopping at farmer’s markets is also helpful. Many markets have a double up program that gives you twice as much food as you pay for. This is an effective way to support local farms and get more fresh produce than you could from a grocery store.
Focus on staples.
One of the easiest ways to stretch your food stamps is to purchase shelf-stable staples like rice, pasta, beans, potatoes, and canned meats. These versatile ingredients can be used in a variety of recipes, so you don’t have to worry about eating the same thing every night. Shake up the spices and styles of your food, but focus on ingredients that incorporate the affordable, shelf-stable staples. Add rice, beans or pasta to as many meals as possible to help the meal go farther.
Order your groceries online and pick them up to avoid temptation.
You can order groceries online from Walmart and pay with EBT when you pick them up! Other retailers have also started offering this service. Shopping online with a meal plan can help you reduce impulse buys, which can help you stick to a budget and save a lot of money.
