How to Tease Your Hair

What You'll Need
---------------------------------------------------------------------

* Lightweight hairspray
* Hair clips
* Fine-tooth teasing comb

Step 1: Add Volume Carefully
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Before you begin, decide where your hair naturally needs volume. You don't want your head to look lumpy or unnatural once you've teased it. Look at your profile in a mirror and see where your head start to round towards the back. That's where you want to add the volume.

Step 2: Section Your Hair
---------------------------------------------------------------------

With your comb, separate the section you want to tease. Divide into 1/4 to 1/2 inch sections and clip all but one section out of the way. You should start from the back and work your way forward.

Step 3: Spray and Tease
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Grab your first section of hair and lightly spray it with hairspray. Hold your hair tight at an angle over you head. Starting about an inch above your scalp, pull the comb down through your hair in short strokes. This is a lacing technique that locks the teased strands of hair together, creating volume.

Step 4: Keep Teasing

Keep teasing the different sections of your hair until you reach your desired fullness. If you want, once you reach the top of the round of the head, incorporate pieces from the side of your head so that it falls evenly. Check your work periodically to make sure the shape and volume is how you want it.

Step 5: Hide the Tease
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Add some teased pieces to the side to even out the volume of the back. The side pieces should be smaller. The added volume and height can actually make your face appear slimmer and elongated, so add side volume with discretion.

Step 6: Smooth Your Hair
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Holding the volume in place with one hand, brush through the ends of the hair so that it's smooth and lays flat.
