Description from the creator

Quick & Easy!

In today's video, I'll be showing you how to test a Lawn Mower Starter, that came off a Craftsman Riding Lawn Mower (Model: 944.600041).

This starter was blown, so I quickly disassemble it to salvage the gear (Which I will most likely use at a later date).

Once the starter is disassembled, I use an Eliminator (no pun intended) Battery Booster to engage the starter on the work bench.

This is my 12 volt power source, but if you don't have one, you can use a 12v battery from your mower, and some jumper cables!

The battery booster is nice, because it has an on/off switch (Which makes testing things very easy).

To test the starter, simply hook up;

RED (Positive) to the Stud with the nut on it.

BLACK (Negative) tp the base of the start (Where it bolts to the mower).

Note: This model grounds through the base, others may have its own ground cable.

When engaged, this starter turned slowly, and sometimes made some grinding noises. It was scrapped & a replacement was installed!

WHY TEST A STARTER?

There may be multiple reasons why your mower doesn't start.

Testing a starter is just 1 step in a "Process of Elimination".

If your mower doesn't crank the engine over, when you turn your key (But the starter passes a "bench test") then you know the starter isn't the issue.

At that point, you can move onto the Solenoid, or other components that may be causing your machine to not start!
