Learn how to easily test your Digital Multimeter's fuses without having to open the case, using the ohms function and test leads.

Most Digital Multimeters, that meet national standards, will have fuses in the current input jacks to protect you. These fuses are typically located inside the meter and they are high energy fuses; meaning they can take a high amount of load without any damage or injury to you.

When you take your multimeter, change to the ohm function, jump from the volt/ohm jack to the amp jack, you will measure across the fuse and measure its continuity. This will allow you to determine whether the fuse is open/bad or closed/good.

A nice feature of the Fluke 87 V Digital Multimeter is the Lead Alert function. If you take measurements with leads in the wrong jack, the Fluke 87 V will give you an indication. This is also an indication that your fuses are okay.

Fuses are often overlooked when it comes to electrical testing equipment safety. Yet as a protection against electrical shock and overheating wires, using the right fuse for the job is critical.
