Treat an allergic reaction to amoxicillin
Amoxicillin is a drug used to kill certain bacteria in the body. Though it is usually effective, some people’s body can’t tolerate amoxicillin. This intolerance shows up as a variety of discomforts. If you suspect an allergic reaction to amoxicillin, do the following measures.
Know the symptoms of an allergic reaction. There are various symptoms of an allergic reaction. The symptoms differ from where they appear and how severe they are. Symptoms include rashes, itchiness, skin redness, swelling, sneezing, pain, fever, stomach upset, diarrhea, difficulty in breathing, rapid heartbeat, confusion, and loss of consciousness. Stop taking the amoxicillin. Immediately stop taking the drug even though the doctor has said that you should finish the entire dose. An allergic reaction isn’t a normal effect of amoxicillin. Avoid taking the drug again in future. When an allergic reaction has occurred upon taking amoxicillin, it’s very likely that it will happen again every time amoxicillin is taken. Make a list of things that you’re allergic to, and include amoxicillin. Keep this list with you always. Ask for an alternative to amoxicillin. Amoxicillin is just one of the many antibiotics available. Amoxicillin is a type of penicillin, which has a similar structure to certain antibiotics such as cephalosporins. When you’re allergic to amoxicillin, you’ll be given other antibiotics that aren’t similar to it. Take small doses. When the doctor decides that you absolutely have to take amoxicillin, he may make you take small doses at first. If your body doesn’t show complications, he’ll gradually increase the dose until you get comfortable with the usual amount. Take antihistamine. Antihistamine is given to combat allergic reactions. There are some which can be bought over-the-counter such as loratidine and dipenhydramine, while others are available only with a prescription. Antihistamine may be taken as a tablet, capsule, nasal spray or a liquid. The instructions differ according to the medication’s form. Read about how to properly take the drug. Take an epinephrine shot. Epinephrine is used for more severe symptoms of allergic reaction. This drug opens up the body’s airways, improves blood circulation and relaxes the body. Epinephrine is a prescription drug, and this may be dangerous to those who have certain health conditions. Read and follow the instructions on how to use epinephrine shots. Alleviate the rash. Treat the rash with rash ointments. Wash with mild soap and lukewarm water and keep the area clean. Pat the skin dry and avoid excessive sweating because moisture may aggravate the rash. Treat the diarrhea. Ask your doctor for an anti-diarrhea medication that is safe for you. Replace the lost fluid by drinking plenty of water, fruit juices, and electrolyte replacement drinks. Avoid drinking alcohol, coffee or tea. Eat light foods such as soups, fruits, vegetables, rice, and wheat. Avoid heavy foods that are hard to digest such as pork or beef, fried foods, fatty foods, and sugar-rich foods. Rest. An allergic reaction is tiring especially if it involves shortness of breath. Rest with your head flat on bed and your feet slightly raised. Avoid tiring yourself.
Severe allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeats, confusion and loss of consciousness require immediate medical intervention. Do first aid measures but go to the doctor as soon as possible. Call for help if you’re alone. This article serves as a guide but doesn’t replace medical help.
