I'll show you a way to update Joomla 2.5.27 to 3.8.2. Most videos don't show you that you need to change the PHP version after a step while updating Joomla. I'll include this step.

Also, after you update to 3.5.1, you will need to delete these files below "legacy.php" as they are no longer needed and you may have problems trying to login:
/libraries/cms/controller/legacy.php
/libraries/cms/model/legacy.php
/libraries/cms/view/legacy.php
