How to Play Shred Guitar Sequences - Lead Guitar Lesson on Scale Sequences

Shred guitar playing is a style of guitar playing that requires monster skills. You need speed, dexterity, the ability to move over the fretboard with fluid motion, and an ear for some of those darker or more classical sounding scales that are often used in this type of playing. This lesson Robert will teach you how to play shred guitar sequences that may sound familiar to you if you listen to speed metal, thrash metal, or the neo-classical guitarists who make their money playing shred guitar.

This lead guitar lesson on scale sequences includes two examples, one a little more challenging than the other. Robert starts by demonstrating a C major shape over A. The lesson employs alternate picking throughout. Robert discusses and demonstrates doubling, which is essentially playing each run of notes on every string twice. This is a feature of shred guitar playing that, when played up to speed, really increases the overall effect of the shred. Played up to speed, it really sounds like you are blasting out the notes, when all you’re really doing it repeating patterns. As simple as it seems, this is a key technique to remember and master.

When you know how to play shred guitar sequences, you can vary them and play with them to really open up their melodic and creative potential. In the second sequence Robert shows you a more complex variation. You can also add some additional techniques to spice this lick up. Slides, hammer-ons, and note bending can add some texture. Start off slow and work your way up to speed. You’ll be amazed by how these shred guitar sequences will not only let you burn up the fretboard, but will help you develop strength in your fingers and a more precise picking style as well.
