Just got a new guitar? Congrats! In this beginner-friendly Guitar Tricks video, Gary walks you through everything you need to do next to make sure your instrument is ready to play. This includes basic guitar setup tips, tuning, checking action and intonation, and making minor adjustments — all using beginner-friendly language and tools.

Start by removing any plastic and tags from your electric guitar or acoustic guitar — especially the plastic film on pickups or pickguards. Use a soft cloth or even a butter knife to remove plastic stuck under knobs. Once clean, it’s time to tune your guitar using a headstock tuner or tuning app. Remember the string names: E, A, D, G, B, E — a key part of learning how to play guitar.

Check the guitar action, which is the height of the strings from the fretboard. If the strings are too high, playing will be difficult; too low, and you’ll get fret buzz. On electric guitars, you can use an Allen wrench to adjust saddle height and bridge position. Beginners should avoid adjusting the truss rod without professional help, especially on acoustic guitars.

You’ll also want to make sure your guitar has proper intonation — where the strings are in tune both open and at the 12th fret. You can fix this by adjusting the saddles on the bridge.

Lastly, invest in essential accessories: a strap, guitar picks, a guitar amp (modeling amps like the Roland Cube or Line 6 are great for beginners), and cleaning supplies like lemon oil or Dunlop 65.
