Here's how to use a solder to repair or make a new balanced XLR cable with Neutrik connectors. 🔧 The Doctor Mix cable-making rig is ready!

We use lead-free solder, because it's not toxic, and Neutrik plugs, which are our favourites. Because we're building a balanced XLR, the wire has a hot and a cold. ⚠️ Slide the barrel and the heat shrink onto the cable first: you don't want to forget them! Then strip, twist and tin each wire, and be quick with the solder, because you don't want to get it too hot.

The pin numbers are printed on the plug. On the female plug, pin 1 is top left, pin 2 is on the right and pin 3 is at the bottom; on the other end, pins 1 and 2 swap sides. The hot goes on pin 2 and the cold on pin 3. ✅ Then test it before you close it, and be quick with the heat gun, before you start melting the cable itself!
