How to soundproof a window.

It is never a good idea to have a window in a recording studio and my home studio has two so I needed to work out how to soundproof a window. As the shed studio is located near a main road and train line, I needed to soundproof the windows as a priority. I also wanted the soundproofing to be removable so that I can bask in natural light. I designed removable window boxes and this is how I did it.

My guide to how to soundproof a window - make an MDF box (moisture resistant MDF is better due to its density), reinforce with 3x2 timber, fill with acoustic insulation, squash down with a sheet of cement board, seal with acoustic sealant, close the box, stick acoustic foam to the back, wang it in the window.

The main thing to consider is putting as much density as possible between the inside and outside of the room, this is why I opt for moisture resistant MDF and sheets of cement board. Make sure you seal everything as even small gaps let a surprising amount of noise through. always opt for db reducing materials over thermal versions, such as fibre glass.
