Do you really know what you are doing to your mix when you use the Phase Switch? I bet you don't! Intelligent Phase Alignment is one of the most mystical yet pretty easy topics in audio engineering. In this first episode of faTutorial we will cover the issues with the 'so-called' Phase Switch and do some experiments that will suprise you even if you are a pro.

One of basic problems I found is the term Phase Alignment itself. Although it's technically correct it indicates that you can say "these mics are out-of-phase". The question you should ask yourself first is: At what frequency do the phase cancellations occur between the mics? There the problem gets clearer. Certain frequencies cancel each other out, other's dont. The result is the so-called comb filter effect with different notch and peak frequencies in the whole spektrum. That's why I generally like to replace the term "Phase Alignment" with "Time Alignment" or even better "Runtime differences".

The problem with the Phase Switch is: You can only invert the polarity of the signal which shifts the comb filter frequencies into another position in the spectrum. It doesn't effect the time at all. Therefore using a Phase Switch can only hide the problem at best.

That's why Phase Alignment Plug-ins are essential to get your mix transparent and punchy. Some audio engineers just shift the regions in the DAW to solve these kind of issues. That's a possible but sub-optimal solution as it lacks accuracy.

To sum it up: Phase switches can sometimes be useful, especially if you have some wiring problems etc. To best way to fix your phase problems is a manual or even better Automatic Time Alignment with sample delay plug-ins.
