How to pump your own gas Know which side of the car your gas tank is on. Drive up to the pump with your gas tank opening as close as possible to the pump. Turn off your car. Select your payment method and pay for your gas. Remove the gas cap on your gas tank. Remove the nozzle and insert it into the gas tank opening. Make sure it's secure. Select your grade of gasoline.
