Al Jazeera is an international news network that provides coverage of news and events in the Arab world.  In the U.S., Al Jazeera English can be viewed online and, in some cases, via satellite and through cable providers.  While many major cable providers do not carry Al Jazeera English, a live web stream is available, and viewers can also access programming and coverage via YouTube.

Interest in Al Jazeera's programming grew substantially in late-January and early-February of 2011, when protests began in Egypt over Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.  Demonstrators flooded streets throughout the country, demanding an end to Mubarak's 30-year reign.  Al Jazeera broadcast the demonstrations early on and continued to do so as the crisis in Egypt unfolded.  The network's coverage prompted some Americans to demand that Al Jazeera be made available in the U.S.

If you are looking for ways to watch Al Jazeera English in the U.S., you do have options.  First, Al Jazeera English has a live stream available 24/7 online, via the network's official website.  In order to view the live coverage, viewers may need to install certain plug ins on their computer.  In addition, Al Jazeera notes on the website that some viewers may not be able to access the video services "due to copyright and distribution restrictions."  The network suggests that viewers unable to access the live stream try to acess via its "subscription partners," including Livestation and YouTube's video on demand.

Another possible option for watching Al Jazeera in the U.S. is YouTube.  According to The New York Times, YouTube began "promoting" its Al Jazeera English channel on January 31, 2011.  The channel has actually been up since November 2006.  The Al Jazeera YouTube channel features a live stream from the network, along with several individual videos on topics throughout each day.

Al Jazeera English is not carried by major satellite and cable companies in the U.S.  On January 31, 2011, The New York Times says it asked several providers, including DirecTV, Comcast and Time Warner Cable, whether they carried Al Jazeera English or if they planned to add it "in light of the events in Egypt."  Most said they do not carry Al Jazeera and "have no plans" to do so.

Al Jazeera English may be available from some cable providers in parts of the U.S.  According to the network's official webpage, Al Jazeera English is carried by a handful of cable companies in Ohio, Vermont and Washington DC.  Two broadband providers are also listed on the website: JumpTV and Islamicity.
