In 1833, after 46 years of fighting, William Wilberforce abolished slavery in the British Empire.
With a movement of abolitionists behind him, Wilberforce fought this battle on two fronts: changing minds and changing laws.
First, he created a complete mindset shift that challenged what people believed about slavery. Slavery thrived under the veil of a cover narrative that justified its existence. It claimed that slavery was a morally good institution that slaves enjoyed. That they were well-treated and that their lives were made better as slaves. That they were too inferior to thrive in freedom.
Wilberforce tore down this cover narrative and opened the world’s eyes to the truth. That to deprive another human of their freedom, to treat them as a product to be bought, sold, and owned was unimaginably evil and unjust.
In the second front of the battle, he fought relentlessly to change the laws of the day to make slavery illegal. And yet, this victory was incomplete.
30 years later, Victor Hugo said, “slavery still exists. But now it only applies to women. And its name is prostitution.” Women have become the new product to be bought, sold, and owned by men.
There are currently an estimated 42 million people trapped in prostitution. 98% are women and children. But the fight is the same. Like Wilberforce, we must create a mindset shift in our society and change the laws that enable the commodification of women.
The world is blinded by a cover narrative. A narrative that says prostitution is the world’s oldest profession, that prostitution is a choice, that it empowers women, that it’s a form of sexual liberation. This is a lie. Prostitution is a system of violence, exploitation, and inequality.
We must support the Abolition Model. A law that criminalizes the act of buying sex, and protects the safety and wellfare of those trapped in prostitution.
