Adobe Audition Tutorial - Remove Reverb from Audio with DeVerberate 2

If you are capturing audio with your camera or mobile device in an enclosed area, you’re likely to encounter reverb. Sometimes, you just can't avoid recording in a large hall or a stark office setting where reverberation is present. Reverb may seem difficult to remove, but it is important to alleviate the issue. The importance of good audio cannot be understated; Poor audio can ruin your beautiful imagery!
I’d like to show you how to use the Deverberate 2 plugin, which I was given for evaluation by Acon Digital. It can fix reverb issues quickly and easily, which is great for the novice, but it also offers features for the more advanced user.
We’re using Adobe Audition here, although you can use it in other applications. First, remember that Adobe Audition doesn’t automatically look for new plugins. With the plugin installed and your track loaded in audition, go to Effects, Audio Plug-in manager. Click the Scan for Plugins button and Deverberate will appear.
OK, so now we can apply the effect to our track. Go to Effects, then VST or VST 3, and you’ll find the effect in the restoration category.
When the effect panel pops up, you’ll see a graph that represents the estimated spectrum of reverb. Under that, you’ll love the simplicity of two controls for source reverb settings and two controls for output reverb settings.
The output reverb level is the decibel control over what the plugin thinks is reverb. This should be toggled off by default so you hear just the dry output, which makes it easier to hear how your settings are affecting the audio. To the left of this is the dry level, the level of your original un-effected audio.
On the source side, we have reverb time and reverb level controls. Adjust the reverb time, which is measured in seconds, to what you perceive to be the decay time. That means the time required for the reverberations to die away.
Notice the “A” button. By clicking this, the plugin will estimate the reverberation time automatically. You can watch the calculations real-time when you play the clip. The best results will be obtained when you provide a portion of audio where a pause is heard so it can best listen to the entire reverberation.
The reverb level control is in decibels. As the tool tip suggests, start at a low level and increase until the reverberation is reduced without affecting the direct signal.
You could also try to use the available presets based on your given situation, but note that without any fine-tuning, we already have greatly improved the audio in this instance. Listen to the track now. Here’s the old again for reference.
If you are a novice, you could be done right now with the improvements you made with the dials. But what really makes Deverberate 2 shine is the early reflections filter. The plugin estimates these first reflections (that arrive up to around 50 milliseconds after the direct sound) in a totally separate algorithm from the later reverberations. Even though there’s a lot going on behind-the-scenes here, you just have to worry about 3 simple buttons to use the early reflections filter.
The Learn button with the ear symbol enables the plugin to perform the early reflection estimation. When you play your audio clip, you’ll see the graph change to depict these estimations. Then, click the learn button again to disable it. You’ll see the filter becomes activated, denoted by the right power icon.
The middle icon with the eye shows the band controls, where you can adjust the cut-off frequencies. Lowering the horizontal bar down in decibels reduces the strength of the correction being applied.
Moving down, you’ll notice the spectral smoothing tool. This is used to mask any artifacts left after reducing reverberation, but you’ll usually leave this at zero. Difference monitoring lets you hear what is being removed from your signal thanks to the effect. The emphasis filter lets you make manual corrections to the reverb profile. The colored circles are your handles to adjust the curve. The arrows that appear after clicking a circle alter the peak or shelving filters.
Round out the interface, on the top right you’ll see the undo and redo arrows and the A/B comparisons. This lets you keep two sets of parameters so you can easily compare them to each other. The arrow in the middle lets you copy the settings from A to B or vice versa.
It is my opinion that this powerful tool is a must-have. Reverb is a common issue that affects all levels of content creators and this tool easily and effectively fixes the problem.
