Hexaflexagon tutorial
ChannelIsa BrittenDescription from the creator
Maths assignment. Links well to stage 2 area of the syllabus. Enjoy
The digital resource I created for this assignment is a video on how to make a Tri-Hexaflexagon. It will be used under the Measurement and geometry strand, two-dimensional shapes (2D shapes). The digital resource corresponds to the stage two area of the syllabus, specifically year four as the resource covers a large amount of content from the two-dimensional space unit 2.

Outcomes:
• A student manipulates, identifies and sketches two-dimensional shapes, including special quadrilaterals, and describes their features MA2-15MG (BOS, 2012, p.176).
• A student uses appropriate terminology to describe, and symbols to represent mathematical ideas MA2-1WM (BOS, 2012, p.176).
. Compare and describe two-dimensional shapes that result from combining and splittingcommon shapes, with and without the use of digital technologies (ACMMG088)
➢ combine common two-dimensional shapes, including special quadrilaterals, to form other common shapes or designs, e.g. combine a rhombus and a triangle to form a trapezium.
. Record the arrangements of common shapes used to create other shapes, and the arrangement of shapes formed after splitting a shape, in diagrammatic form, with and without the use of digital technologies
➢ record different combinations of common shapes that can be used to form a particular regular polygon, e.g. a hexagon can be created from, or split into, many different arrangements.
The resource addresses the selected outcomes as students are offered the opportunity to communicate using the language in the syllabus: shape, two-dimensional shape (2D shape), triangle, quadrilateral, parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus, trapezium, hexagon, reflect (flip), rotate (turn) and tessellate. Communicating is also achieved as students will be describing and naming the common shapes formed using the Hexaflexagon.
