New Years Resolutions. I had 2 last year. The first was to start making Videos and Vlog’s to give advice to my Children as they grew up. You are now viewing clips of the 50 I made. 5 minutes of video at a time for a total of 250 Minutes. ONE AT A TIME. They add up!
It was hard, it wasn’t always on time, and it wasn’t always quality material. But I completed one of my resolutions. But what is a resolution? And Why do so many of them get broken? Is it lack of motivation? Or are we perceiving it’s meaning incorrectly? Let’s look at the definition:
Resolution: a firm decision to do or not to do something (google)
This is the definition our society is familiar with today. It is most synonymous with New Years ‘Resolutions.’ Where we make resolutions to eat better, exercise more, work harder and etc.
Many resolutions are broken within weeks of pledging ourselves to them. This could be because we overdo it… we make an over-zealous resolution during an Enthusiasm high and then we find that our pledge was way too big of a commitment. So we break it and move on, like it never happened.
How can you stick to your resolution and motivate yourself to accomplish it?
Let’s look at another definition of ‘Resolution:’ (merriam-webster)
1. The act or process of resolving: as
A.the act of analyzing a complex notion into simpler ones.
So a resolution isn’t just One MASSIVE THING to accomplish, it’s the Act of ‘Solving’ that resolution by breaking it into smaller more simpler parts.
My second resolution was to read 2 books a month. Now, I didn’t pile up 24 novels to have them dauntingly tower over me. I would never have found the motivation with those Authors staring at me, constantly judging my procrastination.
I just started with 1 book. When finished, I put it on my nightstand. I read another and put that on top of the first. Throughout the year, I slowly built a Tower of books…rather a tower of accomplishments.
It was simpler to concentrate on finishing ONE book, a smaller goal that was part of the bigger Resolution. By accomplishing these smaller goals I was able to conquer, defeat and move further past my resolution.
I started reading to my new born. I even read all of his books! And then he tried to read them to me….
My resolution this year will be to increase my goal to 52…or 1 book a week. If you keep at it, one small part of the goal at a time, you can accomplish any resolution.
So just remember that a resolution, while daunting as a whole, is conquerable if you break it up into smaller “easier portions.” Rome wasn’t built in a day. But it was beautiful once finished.
