How to Apply Thymovar

🐝 How To Apply Thymovar Properly
Thymovar is one of the most common late summer Varroa treatments.
Used correctly, it reduces mite levels before winter bees are raised.
Used at the wrong time or in the wrong conditions, it underperforms and stresses colonies.
In this video I show you exactly how to apply Thymovar properly and what you must get right.
🌡 Temperature Comes First
Thymovar works by releasing thymol vapour into the hive.
That release is temperature dependent.
Ideal daytime temperatures are generally between 15°C and 30°C.
Too cold and the vapour release is weak.
Too hot and colonies can become stressed.
Never ignore the forecast.
📦 Correct Placement
Place the wafer directly above the brood nest.
Ensure:
• Good airflow
• No excessive ventilation changes
• The wafer sits flat
• It is not buried under insulation
The vapour must circulate naturally through the brood area.
⏳ Treatment Schedule
Standard protocol usually involves:
• First wafer for around 3 to 4 weeks
• Replace with second wafer
• Complete full course
Always follow label instructions precisely.
Partial treatment equals partial control.
🐝 What You Might See
During treatment you may notice:
• Increased fanning
• Some bearding
• Temporary brood disturbance
• Early mite drop
This is normal if temperatures are within range.
🧠 Where Thymovar Fits in the Year
Thymovar is part of an annual plan.
For me that typically includes:
• Honey removal
• Late summer thymol based treatment
• Winter oxalic acid clean up
If you reduce mites before winter bees are raised, spring becomes far easier.
