The term classical originates from the Latin term classic, which mean of the highest class. After being recognized in France, Germany, and America it took on another definition meaning formal and high of dignity. In the Classical era of music, simplicity of melody and advancement of form were two aims; countering the Rococo style of some of the late Baroque era composers.
