How to boil/eat chestnuts
ChannelKitty xoxoDescription from the creator
I love chestnuts and they're in season until end of December, so check out my short vlog about boiling, cooking and checking how they look done. :)
#1 i boiled them for half hour and let it simmer for 10 more minutes, and i only filled a medium pot with half water and not too many chestnuts.. about 15-20 for now.
#2. You can tell when it's done cause the inside is like a baked potato, soft and it looks cooked. and if you taste it, you'll know the difference more.. so then i emptied the hot water and filled the pot of chestnuts with cold water and let it sit for a bit.
#3. I then peel each and every chestnut or make a slit in the middle of them if I don't plan to eat too many, that way it makes it easier to peel the skin later as it will harden. Eat whenever you like :)
#4 make sure to refrigerate the rest, they can be good for up to 3 weeks.
What's the best way to roast chestnuts?
Place the chestnuts with the flat side down, the cut side up in a single layer in your baking pan. Roast in the oven for about 15-20 minutes. Once you have obtained perfectly oven roasted chestnuts, remove from the oven and wrap them in a clean tea towel.
You might also notice that some chestnuts are cheaper than the other, the good quality ones are not from China, but from Europe or other countries where the chestnuts are growing properly and are not modified, they will also taste a lot better and sweet!
How can you tell if chestnuts are good?
Shake chestnuts individually; any that rattle are not good for eating. A fresh chestnut should feel heavy for its size. Squeeze the chestnut and feel for a mild give between the outer shell and the meat inside. If you get no give, the nut needs to stand at room temperature to sweeten for several days.
Select chestnuts that are heavy for their size with tight, shiny skin. Avoid nuts that have mold on their surface or rattle in their shell—this means they're old.
Keep in your refrigerator for 3-4 days. Remove from the refrigerator a day before roasting.
I usually boil them soon as I get home, that way I know I made mine fresh :)
Are Floating chestnuts bad?
If they are floating on the surface, throw them away. If the sink, they are fresh and can be cooked without worries. Chestnuts cannot really be stored for long.
Can you eat too many chestnuts?
Eating too many chestnuts can have unpleasant side effects such as the formation of air into the stomach (flatulence) and bloating. ... You can eat chestnuts but don't overdo it!
