ChannelKaladharGranitesDescription from the creator
In this video, Dinesh of Kaladhar Granites in Bangalore explains how to buy granite. You learn how to select the right granite for your needs, how to measure granite and how to calculate the cost of granite slabs. You will learn tips on how to buy granite for your home or office.
• How much to buy -- measure the exact size of the room and add 5-10% for wastage. For example, if the room size is 10ft x 10ft - 100 sqft, add 5% for skirting and another 5-10% for wastage. You will need to buy 115 sqft.
• How to measure the granite slab -- mark out the maximum square or rectangular measurement on the slab after excluding any defects or breakages around the edges of the slab. Usually, the granite slabs are measured in inches. If the square or rectangle you marked is 90" x 30" then you should pay for 90"x30"=2700 divided by 144 i.e. 18.75 sqft
If the measurement is in millimeter, for example 2400mm x 1200 mm, you should pay for 2.4 m x 1.2 m x 10.762 i.e. 2.88x10.762 =30.994 sqft
• Buy granite which is water cut - Granite can be cut with water or kerosene as the medium. You should avoid buying kerosene cut granite as it does not stick to cement or glue surface if it is not totally dried.
• Don't buy artificially colored granite -- granite can be colored artificially. However, artificial color is not permanent and wears out over time leaving the granite looking like a patch of colors. You can rub the colored surface with some water to see if it is artificially colored.
• Granite with fine grains will have more density and will be heavier.
• Buy granite with uniform grains -- quality of a granite slab is determined by the uniformity of grains. A slab with uniform surface grains is usually more expensive compared to one with non-uniform grains of veins. However, some people prefer to buy granite with non-uniform grains as it looks unique and is difficult to copy in an artificial stone.
• How much to pay for your granite slab -- many things determine the price you pay for granite but come are more important than others. Usually, the price is determined by demand and supply of the specific granite variety. The demand, in turn, depends on suitability of the material for flooring, cladding and other uses. The more versatile the variety, the higher the demand and price. The price also depends on how easily the granite variety fits in with other varieties and material.
• Buy a finish that is suitable to the use - granite comes in many finishes. Which one you buy depends on how and where you want to use it. if you are looking to use it as flooring in bathroom or other wet areas, you should buy antiskid finish. You can buy textured finish for heavy traffic areas. Buy polished finish for regular flooring and Kitchen.
• How to select the right thickness - granite slabs are generally available in 20 / 30 / 40 mm thickness. You should chose the thickness based on usage. You can also buy 10 mm thick tiles in some cases.
