It is a fact that we like people who are like us.

If you mirror the other person's body language, on the surface, you may just feel like a clown trying to imitate the person you are talking to, but on a deeper level, it sends a signal to that person that you two are alike. And in turn, will make that person trust you.

Researchers at the Boston University Medical School studied films of people having conversations. The researchers noticed that the people talking began unconsciously to coordinate their movements such as finger movements, eye blinks and head nods. When they were monitored using scientific devices, it was found that some of their brain waves were spiking at the same moment too. As the conversations progressed, these people were getting into rapport with each other.

If the person leans forward, you lean forward. If the person crosses her arms, cross you arms too. If the person stretches her back, you stretch you back too.

But here's the caution. Do not mirror the person's actions exactly after execution.

Here’s what you can do instead. Mirror the other person's actions 5 seconds after the other person has executed it. 5 seconds is already an acceptable amount of time for the other person not to notice what you are trying to do.

It doesn’t end with only actions. You can also copy words uttered by the other person. You just have to be more careful here.

The rule of thumb here is, the more subtle it is, and the more effective it's going to be.
