Description from the creator

Hi everyone! Horses are an expensive hobby that will generate a certain cost to keep every single month. Even if you aren't really doing anything with your horse, he will still need to be fed, have his feet trimmed, and have a roof over his head.
If you are trying to figure out how to afford a horse, or even saving up your money to lease or buy your first horse, you have to have a way to make some money to support your horse habit!
Here are some ideas of what I do in order to generate extra money to help support my horses.

1. Get a part time job
This is the first thought that comes to mind. If you don't have a job, get one. This is the most reliable way to make some extra money every month. It will take time away from your horse time though, so the other ideas may be more appealing to you.

2. Make something to sell
This is what I do when I want to make some extra money for whatever reason. My go to project for making extra money is building horse jumps. I will make a set of jumps and put them on Craigslist to sell. I usually end up selling at least 2 or 3 sets of jumps from the one add that I put up on craigslist.
Let me give you an example...
I list a set of horse jumps for $275.00 on Craigslist, and will get 5 to 10 emails about the jumps. I make sure to respond to every email I get, and answer all the questions. The ad is an excellent way to get a conversation started with someone who wants to buy horse jumps. Then once we start talking, they will want to customize the set, and add a few different items. This is perfect for me, because then I can give them a quote on the jumps that they want, and then a time frame of when their jumps will be ready for them. So now I have an order for jumps that I start to build, while the other ad is still generating interest for me.
And even if I sell the jumps in the ad, I still get people emailing me, and asking if the jumps are still available and I let them know that it has been sold, but I would be happy to make them the same set, for the same price, and they can choose their own colors. People LOVE that!
I really start focusing on building jumps in the springtime, because this is when people have been cooped up all winter, and they want to get out and ride, and they usually get an income tax refund giving them a little bit of money to spend on something they really want, like their own jumps!

3. Selling stuff on eBay or Etsy
This is fun to do, but it does require a little bit of work. You will also have to pay listing and sellers fees, but you don't pay these fees until after your item has sold on eBay (usually) and Etsy charges $0.30 per listing. But if you have tack laying around, or you can get artsy, you can open an Etsy store. and the money that you generate will offset the cost.

4.Work at your barn
If you regularly go to a barn either to ride, or where you keep your horse, look for ways you can make money at the place you love, your barn! You can clean stalls, groom horses, prepare horses for show, or other things too!

5. Lease (partial lease) your horse
If you already have a horse and you are looking for ways to earn a little extra money you may want to consider doing a lease or partial lease of your horse. It may not pay for the complete cost of upkeep, but it will certainly help! If you have a trainer you are working with, they may be able to team you up with someone who is looking to lease a horse, and you will get the added benefit of having your horse get a few extra lessons every week, and maybe even show experience, depending on how you want to set up your lease.

These are just 5 ideas of ways you can earn a little extra money to help with the cost of having a horse. And if you are doubtful it can work, let me break down the extra money I make every month to help with the expense of my horses:

1. Part time job (over time or working extra at my current job)
=$300.00
2. Selling jumps = $1,125.00
3. Selling items on eBay and Etsy = $200.00

Extra money earned monthly: $1625.00

You see, all of those little extra ways of earning money really does add up! And you can generate enough income with side hustles to not only justify your horse, but also to pay for your horse each and every month!
