How To Find and Keep True Love

HOW TO FIND AND KEEP TRUE LOVE // I believe most people will struggle their whole life trying to find (and keep) true love. The biggest culprit which prevents people from doing this is a failure to understand one's value apart from what another human being ascribes to him.

Establishing our value in other people's opinions of us is a losing game and ultimately establishes that person as an idol in our lives.

The thought processes go something like this;

"As long as I stay thin my, husband will still be attracted to me,"
"As long as my leader finds my input meaningful, then I'll be an important member of the team,"
"As long as I ​serve in my church, God will be pleased with me."

Basically, "As long as I keep performing, then I deserve to be loved."

​You see whenever we try to establish our value through another person, we will inevitably be disappointed for two reasons; 1.) You'll have to work harder and harder to achieve new successive levels of intimacy and acceptance, and 2.) Instead of valuing you, the person from whom you're trying to receive your value will actually end up disrespecting you (at best), or even despising you (at worse.)

Another common reason why people fail to find and keep true love is because they make their commitment in the wrong things and to the wrong people. Here's what I mean.

When we find someone to whom we wish to commit, we often focus on the personal effort we must "promise," or expend to keep that commitment and that relationship going. Maybe it's a commitment to remain faithful. Or a commitment to stop doing so many girls' nights, or simply a commitment to be a better version of yourself.

Because those commitments (or promises) are based upon executing a superior form or morality, the commitment is doomed to fail at least once, if not multiple times because of our human shortcomings and inadequacies.

The only commitment we should ever make to another person is not even really a commitment (or an action) at all. Rather, it's a position.

Here's what a good commitment, one that helps you find and keep true love, sounds like; "I commit to allowing God to love you through me."

This commitment has nothing to do with personal promises, good intentions, or even perfect actions. This type of commitment is one whereby you choose everyday, to stay in close proximity to God; close enough that his love can flow easily through you to another person.

This is the kind of commitment that can last and breath life into struggling relationships, because it's based upon a commitment that God desires to keep with his people -- a commitment to love them unconditionally.
