Description from the creator

Yes — you can fire your lawyer. But how you do it determines what it costs you, from paying two fees to hurting your case. Board Certified trial lawyer Brian Beckcom explains how to do it right.

Need a second opinion on your case or your lawyer? Call our office directly at 877-724-7800 and ask for Brian or Vuk by name.

You have the right to choose who represents you — at any point in your case. But in contingency-fee cases, firing a lawyer without good cause can leave the first lawyer with a claim to part of your recovery. Good cause is about performance: a lawyer who doesn't return calls, lets your case sit for months, hides the ball on strategy, or pressures you to take a quick, cheap settlement offer instead of preparing your case for trial. Document what happened, put the termination in writing, and hire the new lawyer before you cut the old one loose — done correctly, the lawyers divide one fee, and you don't pay twice.

Questions this video answers:
— Can I fire my lawyer whenever I want? Yes. The client controls the relationship, not the lawyer.
— Will I have to pay two lawyers? Handled correctly, no — in most contingency cases the attorneys divide a single fee.
— What counts as good cause to fire a lawyer? No communication, no progress, and pressure to settle cheap are the classics.
— Does switching lawyers hurt my case? Not if you move promptly and your new lawyer knows how to take over cleanly.
