How to pay for Long Term Care
Hello, my name is Gerald Cummings, and I'm an estate-planning and elder-law attorney in San Jose. In working with clients one thing that comes up is "how do I pay for skilled nursing care if something happens to me?"
Do you have a loved one in a nursing home? If so, you need to find ways to pay for it.
A lot of people think that Medicare will help pay for their skilled care. This is true and it is untrue.

1.Medicare will pay for up to the first 120 days. Then they may pay for the next 80 days that you're in a nursing facility. After that Medicare will not pay anything else.

2.You can also have long term care insurance. If you have long-term care insurance that policy will pay for your skilled care.

3.You can private pay. This is in many ways the easiest and the hardest way to pay for skilled nursing care. It's easy because you just write a check. It's hard because you are writing a check with your own money to pay for your skilled care.

4.The fourth way to pay for skilled care and the way that many Californians pay for it is by receiving benefits under the Medi-cal program. Medi-cal is the name that California gives to the Medicaid program and it's designed for people that if they meet certain financial eligibility requirements it will pay for skilled nursing care.

There are a number of myths about Medi-cal and those will be explored in another video.
If you have a question about these areas, in particular about Medi-cal, please call me at the number listed below or visit my website.
